Feature interview with Dadeism
Submitted by Edgar Velasquez on Wed, 02/15/2012 - 11:11
After a grueling 2 years of production, 2 radio debuts, and 8 months in hiding, underground Hip Hop producer and engineer Dadeism gives IHLET some much needed face time to discuss
trials and tribulations, friends, love, work and of course a brand spanking new LP in the works!
So what's good?
Same old same, no sleep, over worked and broke, still drunk form last night. Heh heh.
Of course, of course! Let's jump right in.
You recently made a couple radio debuts?
Yep, we sure did.
Hows it feel to see your work and ambitions materialized?
Awwww man. What a feeling. Hearing your own stuff and knowing that an entire city is hearing what you hear, better than sex.
Funny how it came along though.
How so?
Well, we worked REALLY hard all year for a more radio friendly EP
with NO luck and NO calls back. Quite the frustration. I mean like zero responses.
After a year of that I just got so sick and tired
of our sound and decided to lay down my arms and write a song
with a more abstract feel to it.
Something more meaningful. Something I'd feel more accomplished with writing and it worked!
GREAT FEELING.
Well congrats on that man. I knew we broke contact for a few months,
glad to see you come back with some results.
What was the drive that pushed you in the direction of college radio?
Well, to be quite honest, a girl. Ha ha.
Ha. That'll do it.
Well, not in the sense your probably thinking.
More of and inspirational way. That and one day
I just realized it was time to take
myself and my music seriously.
Besides, NO ONE will take you seriously as an artist if you don't take yourself
serious as an artist, you know?
I went underground for a few months.
I quit my job and dropped out of school, so that really came at a price.
But sometimes you have to sacrifice one important goal to make another one happen.
I literally spent every hour of my life for a year and a half in front of that fuckin computer
cranking out music. I was so tied down at the lab that
my relationship with my lady at the time definitely took a back seat. Shit was crazy.
That must have been weired.
It was, (EXTREMELY)
but I tried to be professional about it and keep the two separate.
It was kind of a learning curve. I had to treat it as a job.
It was nuts. Being responsible for mixing, mastering, song writing,
leads, chords, melodies, beats, fucking everything, and then being a boy friend at the same time.
Not easy. In the end it just didn't work too well. In other news today....
Will E?
Aw man. What can I say? Working with him is always fun. He's known for being extremely diligent
and knocking out shit on the spot in one take. He's also one of the most dependable
artist I know. We have a good chemistry in the lab and he's always on time and creative.
Plus he's just mad niggerish, so you gotta love that about him too! Ha ha!
Yeah he's defiantly a character. What about Crem27?
He hates me.
Whys that?
Well, we have so much unreleased material and something always happens to where I can't finish
a track. We had a few tracks that were near completion and then my fucking hard drive died!
I really pushed that poor thing to its demise. It never stopped running and one day it just gave up.
OUCH!
Believe me, I cried.
But luckily we have a great working dynamic so cranking out new stuff compensated for our major losses.
Crem (Damien) is doing his thing though. He recently finished a few gigs with Rich & Fameus. I think they just
Dropped a mix tape with The Great Don Canon and his stuff is always great. I really dug the Cool Kids mix tape Canon put together.
Like, I still jam to it to this day.
Word.
Where are you headed now? It's been awfully quiet on your end for a year now.
You're killing me dude.
Well?
I've been tied down since March up here in Tally with work and all.
I can't wait to come home though.
Just doing what I can on my laptop and what not. I can't wait to have access
to my equipment back home. After the
success of Dancing On the Clouds I guess I needed a break. Sometimes
if you love something you have to put it down.
I've been doing a shit ton of writing and when I get back home it's on.
Any prospects?
Hmmmm, I'd most def like to get some face time with Alex Logan from Blood Fusion again.
Well, you two did some amazing work with on that Mary Jane track. Funny ass track.
Dude, he literally just came in and killed it in like two takes, I can't sing for shit and I'm not a
fan of that auto tune nonsense. Having some natural chemistry on the track was good for me. It was most def a lot of fun.
I've always been about collaborating so when it works out it's better than a paycheck for me.
I was there.
You're right. I think hes tied down with his job now or something, but I'm known for pulling a few strings and making shit happen.
I'll see what I can work out.
Me and Crem have been relaying back and forth so that's def in the works. Also, Will E is always available.
Hopefully we can meet some new people but Crem and Will E, that's my team. It's good to have dependable people to work with that
take this shit seriously, you know? I'm big on results as I'm sure you've come to see.
The Internet helps too as well as Soundcloud. I can work on a track and bounce it over to Miami via Gmail or Soundcloud, so that's
a great set of tools to utilize.
So what can we expect with the Animalia LP?
Well, this LP is going to be more straight forward, more traditional sounding as far as lyrics.
I've always been a big fan of Minimalism and abstract stuff, but I want to try something different with this LP.
More breaks and sampling. If you listen to the stuff I did with the Squarebass Kids, it had more of a commercial/ Electro style to it
and that's kind of the trend right now in radio. I'm totally over that now and I'm just gonna go back to making music
for me. Fuck trends.
I know you've always been big on huge kick drums with your tracks, can we expect that with Animalia, or are you
gonna try something different with this LP?
Well, that's a given. I've always used real tight compression and overly loud drums
on most all my tracks and I don't plan on changing that. So, NO.
Not for nothing. I'm stubborn.
What about art work?
Good question. I'm hoping to work with this chick Kristin Brewster again. She's a very talented individual and great at what she does,
so maybe if I'm lucky, (and cute enough) we can get some more art from her. She was responsible for the Dancing
On The Clouds art work
.
When can we expect this thing to drop? (Or do you just plan on teasing us?)
Ummmmm, I actually don't have a date just yet. We only have two songs completed. Crem is hard at work with new material
and I haven't heard much from Will as yet. As soon as I get back to Miami we plan on hitting the booth for sure.
Also, we want to work with Julian again for a few videos. He's been tied up with some work for Starz Network and I'm really happy to
see my hommie living out his dream. Hopefully, he will be willing to shoot for us again. We go way back and he always
gets shit done. He sent me a video he finished just the other day for Mogly and I was really impressed with his work so my hearts set on working with him again.
I'm really lucky to have such colorful friends in my network that are more than willing to make shit happen, so we'll see what happens.
Good stuff man! I want to thank you for sitting down with us. Any shouts?
No question. Big shouts to my peoples Julian Rodrigues, Damien, Will E, KB, Ihlet.com
and all of Miami for raising me wrong.Ummm how's that? Ha ha.
Thanks for having me dude.
